WHAT MAKES MANUEL ANTONIO DIFFERENT

Manuel Antonio is unusual in Costa Rica. It's one of the most developed tourist areas in the country — the road from Quepos into the park is lined with hotels, restaurants, and tour operators — and yet the park itself is genuinely wild.

Within the park's 683 hectares, you'll find four beaches, a peninsula trail, and a density of wildlife that makes it one of the best places in Costa Rica to see animals with minimal effort: white-faced capuchin monkeys that walk up to you on the beach, three-toed sloths in the trees above the paths, squirrel monkeys (one of only four sites in Costa Rica where they exist), raccoons, coatis, and hundreds of bird species.

That contradiction — heavy tourism infrastructure, genuine wilderness — makes Manuel Antonio both easier to get wrong and more rewarding when you get it right.

TOP EXPERIENCES

Manuel Antonio National Park

Enter early. The park reaches capacity by mid-morning during high season. With a licensed guide, you'll see wildlife that most self-guided visitors walk past without noticing. We book with guides who know which trails have sloth activity on any given day — and which beaches are worth the extra walk.

Beaches Inside the Park

There are four main beaches inside the park. Playa Manuel Antonio is the most famous — calm water, jungle backdrop, monkeys. Playa Biesanz just outside the park entrance is a calm, less-crowded alternative for swimming. We'll tell you which to prioritize based on your timing.

Kayaking and Snorkelling

The waters around the park headland are a marine protected area — good snorkelling on calm days, and kayaking tours that access sea caves and coastline not reachable on foot. We use guides who combine both activities efficiently.

White-Water Rafting (Naranjo River)

The Naranjo River near Quepos offers accessible Class III–IV rafting — a half-day add-on that adds adventure to a beach-forward itinerary. Best during and just after the rainy season when water levels are high.

Sport Fishing from Quepos

Quepos Marina is one of the best sport fishing departure points in Costa Rica. Sailfish, marlin, dorado, and tuna within 30–60 minutes offshore. The fishing here is some of the best in the country year-round.

Sunset Catamaran Tours

A classic Manuel Antonio experience: sailing along the coastline at golden hour, swimming in calm coves, and watching the jungle-backed coast from the water. We work with small-boat operators who limit group sizes.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Dry season: December – April

Best beach weather. Park is busy but the wildlife is accessible year-round. Book accommodation and park entry well in advance — the park has a daily visitor cap.

Rainy season: May – November

Greener, wetter, and significantly cheaper. Rain is usually afternoon-only. Wildlife is actually more active during green season. Fewer tourists in the park means a better experience for those who come.

Avoid major holidays: Christmas, New Year's, and Semana Santa (Easter week) bring intense local and international tourism. If you must visit during these periods, book months ahead.

WHO IT'S BEST FOR

  • Nature and wildlife focused travellers who want guaranteed animal sightings
  • First-time visitors to Costa Rica who want the "iconic" experience
  • Couples — the combination of beach and jungle in a compact area works well for romantic trips
  • Travellers with limited mobility (the park has some paved and accessible trails relative to more remote areas)
  • Anyone who wants a manageable, varied base that offers beach, nature, adventure, and food all within 30 minutes

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

The park has a daily visitor cap. Entry is limited. In high season, book through a licensed tour operator (we handle this) or through the official park booking system in advance. Don't show up and expect to walk in.

The town of Quepos is 7km away. Most accommodation is on the road between Quepos and the park. The road has fantastic restaurants and a genuine local feel — don't sleep at the park entrance and ignore it.

Wildlife does NOT mean safety. The monkeys in Manuel Antonio are famous for stealing food and valuables from unsuspecting tourists. Keep bags closed and don't feed them under any circumstances.

Hire a licensed guide. The difference between a guided and self-guided park visit is enormous. A guide finds the three-toed sloth at 15 metres that you would have walked under without seeing. We only work with licensed naturalists.

GETTING THERE

From San José (SJO): 3–3.5 hours by shuttle or rental car via the Costanera highway. Direct shuttles depart daily — we coordinate. A domestic flight from SJO to Quepos takes 25 minutes if time is a priority.

From Guanacaste (LIR): A domestic flight to Quepos or a 5–6 hour shuttle/drive. We'll advise on whether routing through San José makes more sense based on your full itinerary.
