Arenal & La Fortuna

HERO SECTION
Headline: A perfect volcano. Natural hot springs. More adventure than a week can hold.
Subheadline:
Arenal is one of the most recognizable landscapes in Costa Rica — and one of the most activity-dense. Whether you're here for the volcano, the rafting, the zip-lines, or the hot springs, the challenge isn't finding things to do. It's choosing.

WHAT MAKES ARENAL DIFFERENT
Arenal Volcano is almost perfectly conical — 1,670 metres of symmetrical volcanic cone rising above Arenal Lake on the edge of the Cordillera Central. It was one of the most active volcanoes in the world from 1968 to 2010 and remains a symbol of Costa Rica's volcanic geology.
The town of La Fortuna, 17km from the volcano's base, serves as the activity hub. It's well-developed, well-connected, and genuinely pleasant — not just a jumping-off point but a destination in its own right with good restaurants, a vibrant local market, and easy access to every experience in the region.
The combination of geography — volcanic terrain, large lake, fast rivers, hanging cloud forest — creates a density of adventure options that's unusual even for Costa Rica.

TOP EXPERIENCES
Arenal Volcano National Park
Hiking in the park's lava fields, secondary forest, and lower volcano trails. The summit is not open for climbing (active volcano designation), but the national park trails through lava fields and jungle are excellent. A licensed guide dramatically improves the experience — both for wildlife and geological interpretation.
Natural Hot Springs
The geothermal activity around Arenal feeds a network of natural hot springs. From large resort-style facilities (Tabacón, Baldi) to smaller, more naturalistic pools (Eco Termales, Los Lagos), there's a hot springs experience for every preference. We'll match you to the right option based on your group and what you're looking for.
White-Water Rafting — Balsa and Toro Rivers
Some of Costa Rica's best rafting is accessible from La Fortuna. The Balsa River offers Class III rapids — a great intro for beginners and intermediates. The Toro River steps it up to Class IV. The Pacuare (accessible from La Fortuna on a longer day) is considered one of the top rafting rivers in the world. We connect clients with the guides who know these rivers at every water level.
Hanging Bridges — Mistico Park
A 3km network of suspension bridges through cloud-adjacent forest at canopy height. Excellent for birdwatching, sloth spotting, and the simple experience of being suspended in the jungle. Best at dawn when wildlife activity peaks.
Zip-lining
Multiple operators offer zip-lines through the forests around Arenal. We distinguish between the ones that emphasize safety and scenery versus the ones built for volume. The best options combine zip-lines with rappelling and a Tarzan swing over forest.
Canyoning and Waterfall Rappelling
Rappelling down jungle waterfalls is one of those experiences that sounds more extreme than it is — and delivers far more than people expect. There are several excellent operations near La Fortuna doing this properly with full safety equipment and experienced guides.
Kayaking on Lake Arenal
The lake is large enough to feel like open water with a volcano backdrop. Guided kayak tours, sunset paddles, and windsurfing are all available. In the afternoon, the lake often develops strong winds — timing matters here and our guides know when to go.
Wildlife and Birdwatching
The transition zone between lowland rainforest and cloud forest around Arenal is exceptional for birds — over 400 species in the region, including resplendent quetzal accessible on day trips to nearby Monteverde. Crepuscular tours (dawn and dusk) with specialist guides produce sightings that midday tours miss entirely.

MONTEVERDE — THE SIDE TRIP
Section headline: Arenal + Monteverde: the classic combination.
La Fortuna and Monteverde are about 3 hours apart — connected by a famous boat-and-jeep transfer across Lake Arenal that's become one of the iconic Costa Rica travel moves. The cloud forests of Monteverde offer a dramatically different ecosystem from Arenal's volcanic lowlands: cooler, misty, dense, and home to the resplendent quetzal.
Many of our clients combine Arenal (3–4 nights) with Monteverde (2–3 nights). We know which transfer services are reliable and how to sequence the two for maximum effect.

BEST TIME TO VISIT
Year-round destination. Arenal has a different relationship with seasons than the coast.
Dry season (December–April): More sun overall, but the volcano is often cloud-covered in the afternoon — it's an irony that the clearest views of Arenal sometimes happen during the green season when passing storms clear the sky.
Rainy season (May–November): Lush, green, fewer tourists, and often spectacular sunrise views before afternoon cloud builds. Rivers run higher — great for rafting. Hot springs feel even better in the rain.
Bottom line: Arenal is excellent year-round. Don't let seasonality be the primary reason to choose or avoid it.

GETTING THERE
From San José (SJO): 3–4 hours by shuttle or rental car. Direct shuttles from San José to La Fortuna depart daily. We coordinate for our clients.
From the coast: Multiple shuttle routes connect Guanacaste, Manuel Antonio, and Arenal. Travel time varies by departure point (3–6 hours). Domestic flights from SJO to Arenal Airport (FTN) are available and take under an hour — worth it for time-limited itineraries.
